Once a pregnancy is confirmed through a pregnancy test, a licensed registered nurse will administer an ultrasound. A limited obstetrical ultrasound can:

• Detect fetal heartbeat.
• Determine fetal age.
• Determine approximate due date.
• Detect the location of the pregnancy (Pregnancies that develop outside of the uterus, known as ectopic pregnancies can be life threatening).

During pregnancy, a woman’s body produces a hormone called hCG, found in urine and blood.
